Report of Tutoring Student Second Year of Al Manar Boarding School
Introduction
Vocabulary is one of
the language elements that should be mastered in learning English. Students
need to gain vocabulary as many as possible in order to make them familiar with
many sentences and easier to understand the structure and function. Without
having enough vocabulary, the student will face the difficulties to express
their idea or to comprehend English material.
Mastering
vocabulary is needed to build up the active skills, because the students who
have numerous of vocabulary and always improve their limited vocabulary will be
successful at educational stage. This report about vocabulary development that
student get after studying vocabulary based on multiple choice question. The
tutoring was conducted student in Al Manar boarding school, in Ulee Kareng. The
student’s name is Nuril Akmalia. She is 17th years old. She is 5C class second year of Al Manar
senior high school. She came from Brayeun, Aceh Besar. This tutoring done for 4
meeting, and the method is used grammar translation method.
A. Teacher and
Student Interview
The tutor meet the
teacher at Al-Manar boarding school to do interview about goal of students in
learning English and what the problem that students face in learning English.
Based on teacher interview result show that there is a students that have
problem in learning English especially in remembering vocabulary and do not
confident to answer the question that teacher give in classroom. The teacher give
the name of student and ask that student to follow the tutoring of learning
English.
Furthermore, the tutor’s
meet the student that want to give the tutoring gather with teacher. The tutor
determine the time with students. Based on student interview the time for
tutoring in learning English is did in afternoon, on Tuesday and Friday. The
turoring was 3 meeting in front of dormitory and 1 meeting in canteen. The
media that used in this tutoring is printed media (Question sheet).
B. Procedure of Tutoring
1. The tutor gives reflexion before starting teaching like asking about she
activity.
2. The mentor give the paper (printed media) that content the questions
(multiple choice) about 15 questions of vocabulary in one meeting. (Appendix)
3. Student answer the question without using the dictionary.
4. When she finish, teacher and students discuss together. Then, the teacher
will asking the students about meaning of vocabulary, new vocabulary that she
get and making sentences based on the vocabulary.
C. Result
Meeting 1
The tutor gave
questions paper to student and she have to answer the question about 15 minute
without saw the meaning in the dictionary. After the tutor check the answer,
the students has 5 incorrect answer. The tutor ask the reason why the questions
is incorrect, this because she did not know the meaning. The tutor explain the
meaning of the word that with the sentences. After she known the meaning the
tutor ask her to made sentences based on the new word that her got. The tutor
gave motivation to student about how to be confident in answering the question
in front of the class although that the incorrect answer.
Meeting 2
In
the beginning of the meeting the tutor asked about the new vocabulary that
student got in the pass meeting. Next, gave paper of questions to her with
different vocabulary that mention in the questions. The time for answer is 15
minutes. For this meeting, the student have improvement in answer the questions.
She has 3 incorrect answer. The tutor gave motivation again before close the
meeting.
Meeting 3
Same
with the pass meeting the tutor will ask student about the new vocabulary that
she got before the meeting is begun. After that, the tutor gave questions paper
about different vocabulary questions to student and she have to answer about 15
minutes. That mean 1 question in 1 minute. In this meeting the students can
answer all questions correctly. The tutor’s gave motivation like the meeting
before.
Meeting 4
In the last meeting, the tutor do interview to student about her feeling
during learning and the development that she get after 3 meeting learning. The
student stated that she felt happy in learning vocabulary by using multiple
choice questions. The student also easier to remember the vocabulary by using
that media. They felt any improvement for herself in memorizing the vocabulary.
In addition, the student also said that she more confident for answering the
question in the classroom after got the motivation in this tutoring.
D. Conclusion
The result of this
study show that the student like studying vocabulary by using multiple choice
question. There is improvement of student’s remembering the vocabulary during 4
meeting tutoring and students more confident when answer the questions without
teacher point her to answer.
