Procedure text



                 A procedure text is used to tell someone how to do or make something. This type of the text comes in many forms, such as instruction manuals and recipes. The text consist of three part :
Title / Goal                       : It states the goal to be achieved.
List of materials                : It lists the materials needed. It often gives detail on the size, color, number, 
                                         shapes, quality and other material parts.
List of equipment            : It lists the equipment needed. It also often gives detail on the size, color,  number, 
                                        shapes, quality and others  equipment parts.
Step/procedure             : it describes steps in logical order to achieve the goal. The step are often marked  with number (1,2,3,....) , letter (a,b,c,....), or bullet marks(#,*,¨, ...). Sometimes the steps include caution (s) or warning (s). There are also drawing or picture to make the steps clear.
Example :

Title / Goal :
Mix it Up Salad
                                                                                        

List of materials :
1/3 cup of orange juice
1 tablespoon of honey
1 1/2 cups honeydew melon – cut into cubes
1 pint of strawberries –cut in half
2 cups of grapes
1 green apple – cut into cubes
2 oranges – cut in bite-sized pieces

List of Equipment :
Measuring cups and spoons
A large bowl
A whisk or a fork

Step /procedure :
·         First, make the dressing by putting the orange juice and honey in a large bowl and mix them well.
·         Then, add the fruit.
·         Next, mix until all the fruit is lightly coated with the dressing.
·         Put it in the refrigerator for one hour.
·         Finally, serve it cold.

Language features :
Read the text carefully and you will find the use of :
  • Commands or imperative sentences
e.g.: Make the  dressing by putting the orange juice and honey in a large bowl.
  •  Action verb
e.g.: make, mix, add.
  •  Precise vocabulary
e.g.: 1/3 cup of orange juice
  •  Adverbials of the express details of time and place, manner, and other adverb.
e.g.: mix them well (manner),  in a large bowl  (place),  for one hour (time).
